How to Reduce Wastewater Overflows and Restore Capacity in Sewer Networks and Treatment Plants

How to Reduce Wastewater Overflows and Restore Capacity in Sewer Networks and Treatment Plants

To prevent wastewater overflows and ensure effective management of your city’s sewer systems, Avizo offers a comprehensive flow measurement program combined with investigative services for network issues. This dual approach allows for a thorough assessment of your infrastructure under both dry and wet conditions, enabling you to identify necessary interventions, implement corrections, and restore your systems to their optimal capacity.

Why Conduct a Flow Measurement Campaign?

A flow measurement campaign aims to gather data on water levels and flow rates in sanitary sewer systems, during both dry and rainy weather. This information is crucial for analyzing flow behavior within the networks and pinpointing specific issues. Our team of engineers and technicians develops tailored solutions, taking into account the anticipated impacts of climate change. This study ensures that your sewer systems function properly, providing an adequate level of service for the community.

The flow measurement campaign also evaluates how the sewer network responds to rainfall and the effects of the groundwater table. The data collected helps identify areas with significant inflow of extraneous water.

Objectives of the Investigation and Infiltration Program

Through our program, you can achieve the following objectives:

  • Prevent Floods and Overflows: Reduce incidents that inconvenience residents and lead to costly damages.
  • Minimize Untreated Wastewater Spills: Limit overflows from pumping stations into local waterways.
  • Restore Capacity: Enhance the efficiency of sewer networks and treatment plants.
  • Facilitate Urban Development: Plan for growth while ensuring infrastructure sustainability.
  • Identify and Repair Infiltration Issues: Budget and address infiltration problems within the network.

Avizo utilizes state-of-the-art equipment designed to perform reliably in all conditions, including large-diameter pipes and low-flow scenarios.

Our 2024 Accomplishments

In September 2024, Avizo launched several large-scale projects across Quebec, deploying 185 devices to monitor various flow measurement points simultaneously.

Notably, we were selected by the Régie d’assainissement des eaux du bassin de Laprairie (RAEBL) to conduct a major sewer flow measurement campaign. This project, the largest of its kind in Quebec for 2024, will involve over 82 flow measurement points and 10 rain gauges strategically placed in Candiac, Sainte-Catherine, Saint-Constant, Delson, and La Prairie over a nine-week period.

Additionally, we renewed our contract with the city of Laval to conduct multiple flow measurement campaigns for various municipal projects, aimed at calibrating hydraulic simulation models for domestic and stormwater sewer networks.

Finally, we secured a contract to conduct a flow measurement campaign in Longueuil’s wastewater collection network, covering 14 sites along the borders with Brossard and Boucherville. This 52-week project will measure flows during high groundwater levels, dry conditions, rainfall, and snowmelt, providing essential data for calibrating the network’s hydraulic models.
